Let's be clear from the outset – 20th Century Masters does not contain all of Cream's essential moments. It's missing such mind-warps as "SWALBR," trippy folk-psychedelia as "Anyone for Tennis," flights of fancy as "Wrapping Paper," crushingly inevitable blues as "I'm So Glad," and the brilliant throwaway "Doing That Scrap Yard Thing," all of which added to Cream's character. Still, if you're just looking for the hits, this has most of them, from "I Feel Free" and "Spoonful" to "Strange Brew," "Sunshine of Your Love," "Crossroads," "White Room," and "Badge." For those who like to skim the surface, sampling what they know, this will certainly satisfy, but if you're curious, you're advised to dig deeper than this.

Another one-stop shop from Universal's 20th Century Masters Millennium Collection, here's all the Joe Cocker you need in one packed-with-hits single-disc collection. Kicking off with "Feelin' Alright," "With a Little Help From My Friends," and "Delta Lady," the set also includes his later hits like "You Are So Beautiful" and his duet with Jennifer Warnes, "Up Where We Belong." This may only clock in at 11 tracks, but it's a very potent little package and highly recommended as the perfect starter set.

The Millennium Collection: The Best of .38 Special focuses on the Southern rock group's original lineup and includes hits and radio staples like "Back Where You Belong," "Caught up in You," "Wild-Eyed Southern Boys," and "Rockin' Into the Night." Though it's not quite as comprehensive as Flashback, The Best of .38 Special's dozen tracks provide a good starting point for casual fans.

For Swedish guitarist Alf Carlsson, he has made the choice to dedicate his debut record under his own name to the most luminous of his personal lights, music. Carlsson picked up the guitar at the age of 10, and spent his youth soaking up as much rock, pop, and jazz as he could. In his teenage years, with hair down to his waist and Metallica posters coating his bedroom walls, his parents took him to a Swedish folk music festival. The experience moved him deeply, and he’s revisited the festival every year since.

Tenor saxophonist Christoph Irniger and pianist Marc Perrenoud, both from Switzerland, have long been inspired by Lennie Tristano and his circle. Tristano was no friend of repetition, but he loved paraphrasing. Many of his compositions are based on famous standards, on which he simply invented new melodies. Irniger and Perrenoud wondered how they could do justice to a singular phenomenon like Lennie Tristano without doing exactly what he detested most, namely repeating or even copying him.
