After the Battle of Waterloo, Captain Alec Hayes is presumed dead and soon correspondence with the French are found in his personal things, which makes him a traitor to the British. But Alec isn't dead, and for years he tries to find the evidence to clear his name. With the help of an influential friend, his works for the Home office, to prove his loyalty to the British crown. One of his assignments takes him back to his hometown, where he falls in love with Cressida, but he doesn't want to allow himself to get entangled with any woman till his name is cleared.
