In the fall of 1977, we jointly offered a graduate course in the Department of Psychology and Social Relations at Harvard University. That course, "Psychology and Social Relations 2570: Methods of Applied Social Research," was based on two convictions that we shared. The first was that our graduate students were likely sometime in their professional careers to engage in applied social scientific research. At some point they would all be called upon to evaluate a social intervention. Our second shared conviction was that although the research methods we normally teach to social science graduate students are relevant to applied social research, a different general orientation toward these methods is necessary.
