The Mikoyun-Gurevich Design Bureau developed the third generation MiG-21 variants to give the Fishbed (the MiG-21's North Atlantic Treaty Organization - NATO - code name) a further increase in both range and weapons load. This was largely due to criticisms levelled at earlier generation Fishbeds flown in combat during the Vietnam and the Middle Eastern wars.
