There were a few parts in the plot that did not work for me for instance there is a point in the story where what a musket ball is made of is important to the story and unless I am mistaken they are usually made of lead. Towards the end, without giving the plot away, there is one character who turns out to be something different to how they are portrayed throughout the book unfortunately this also means that they would have known a lot of the things that they were supposedly trying to find out. This left me dissatisfied with the ending.
Moans over it is a good exciting story and quite original I know nothing about infections and how they are transmitted etc but it all sounded quite plausible. All of the characters were well described as were the locations and I felt that I could easily visualise them. Although quite a long book 548 pages and too long for me to read in a single session I did not feel that the author had padded it out for the sake of doing so and every bit fitted in well with the story. There was an underlying environmental message but not one that I think environmentalists would subscribe to.
So if you like a detective adventure with a bit of science fiction, although not too way out, and a lot of action this is for you.
