This book is the outgrowth of the earlier volume, Snapshots of the Carolinas: Landscapes and Cultures, a series of vignett es and fi eld trip guides on the region, which was prepared by numerous geographers at universities mainly in the Carolinas for the 1996 annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers. This book expands on several of the topics covered in the earlier volume and presents a broad updated overview of the major geographical aspects of the region. Geographers and laypersons (both residents and visitors in the Carolinas) are presented with a general background of the region, including the landforms, weather and climate, historical development, changing agricultural, manufacturing and services economy, tourism and recreation, and higher education of these two states.
