Sally knew that she was not a great beauty, but nor was she bad-looking. If she put her hair up just right, perhaps she would turn a head or two. Perhaps a young, noble gentleman, fresh off his tour to Europe would spot her and find her a refreshing sight after the beauties of Italy and France — lovely and English and homely. And perhaps something more would come of it, walks in the park and night of dancing and courtship… Perhaps even marriage, eventually. 

Of course, it was all a daydream — but wasn’t it nice to imagine, to dream of better things? Oh, she wished she was riding in the woods with a dashing, handsome young master instead of picking herbs alone. Yes, Sally knew that she was being silly and foolish, wishing that a young nobleman would sweep her off her feet, but she could not help herself. Besides, she was sure that even the other girls, who teased her about her daydreams, had similar longings.
