Description
This course presents a 360 degree exploration of the design review process as a critical function within engineering and construction project delivery. Participants will develop a strong understanding of how structured design reviews enhance technical quality, reduce errors, and improve compliance with applicable codes, standards, and contract requirements. A primary focus is placed on achieving the 3Cs—Correctness, Completeness, and Consistency—which are essential for successful project execution. The course introduces proven review tools such as Red-Check, DrCheck, and the Automated Review Management System (ARMS) while demonstrating how to incorporate them into a broader Design Quality System. Participants will learn how to formalize review procedures, define leadership roles, and ensure effective interdisciplinary coordination. A case study from Houston Public Works (HPW) will illustrate the real-world consequences of design gaps, ineffective peer reviews, and lack of standardized review protocols.Further, the course identifies and categorizes five major barriers—strategic, structural, human resource, contextual, and procedural—that hinder implementation of sustainable design review systems. Attendees will explore solutions to overcome these challenges and promote a culture of continuous improvement. This course is ideal for engineers, project managers, and quality professionals seeking to elevate design quality, improve efficiency, and ensure project success across all phases of development.
