Description

This course will introduce students to the discipline of hermeneutics, otherwise known as the art and science of biblical interpretation. The science of hermeneutics provides careful methods for investigating the meaning of Scripture within its ancient context. Based on the original meaning of the text, students will also learn how to apply the truth of Scripture to their own context in the modern world. Students will also gain a deeper appreciation of the literary dynamics of the Bible, especially in light of the various genres of Scripture (e.g., historical narratives, epistles, prophetic writings, etc.). The course will emphasize the five-fold hermeneutic of Redemptive-Historical exegesis in its Literary, Grammatical, Historical, Theological, and Redemptive Aspects. The primary goal of this course is to provide students with a firm foundation for biblical exegesis and to become familiar with the redemptive approach for Christ-centered biblical exegesis. No previous experience is required for this course, and the instructor will introduce and explain any new terms and concepts as they arise. After completing this course, students will be well-prepared for future classes in NT and OT exegesis. The course is composed of 10 "weeks".
