Description

This course offers an intensive exploration of life drawing with a focus on technical precision and the cultivation of disciplined observational habits. Students will approach drawing as both an artistic practice and a cognitive skill, learning methods that strengthen accuracy, perception, and interpretive decision-making.The class begins with foundational exercises in line quality, emphasizing wrist-driven movements for controlled mark-making and the development of fine motor precision. Students will practice building refined underdrawings to establish proportion and structure before advancing to heavier, more interpretive line work. Special attention will be given to line weight as a means of expressing spatial depth, contour emphasis, and artistic intention.Observation will be treated as a central discipline. Students will train their gaze to shift rapidly and frequently between subject and drawing surface, a method supported by research showing improved accuracy through higher gaze frequency. The role of binocular and monocular vision will also be examined, with exercises designed to heighten contour recognition, spatial clarity, and awareness of visual distortion.Posture and body mechanics will be studied in relation to drawing accuracy. By maintaining stable upper-body positioning and minimizing head or torso movement, students will learn to reduce perspective errors while achieving greater consistency in their work.Throughout the semester, students will progress from technical drills and studies to more complex compositions, culminating in a final still life project that demonstrates mastery of the principles taught. By the end of the course, students will not only have strengthened their technical drawing skills but also gained a deeper understanding of how vision, movement, and cognition intersect in the act of drawing.
