    Il soldato Pino Lancia ha difficoltà d'inserimento nel mondo militare e cerca tutte le scappatoie per sfuggirvi: ma inutilmente. Ci viene inserito a forza in quel groviglio di serpi. Persino un vecchio amico di suo padre, un alto ufficiale, non riesce a fargli ottenere l'esonero. Così Pino Lancia viene internato in manicomio (perché a giudizio del direttore dell'ospedale militare ha ottenuto troppi giorni di convalescenza) in un padiglione di "malati"; e comincia il suo calvario. Si rende conto che l'ospedale psichiatrico provinciale non guarisce, anzi, peggiora la situazione: gli psicofarmaci profusi a piene mani, gli elettroshock, il lettino di contenzione, il cibo scadente, peggiorano il suo stato di salute, e lo gettano sull'orlo della follia.
