I experimented with several different innovative ways to teach calculus (including using 3D plots) in the past. But none of them seemed to reduce the complexity of calculus (especially calculus 3). Students still had problems understanding limits of integration, etc.

When I used vegetables and chopped them up at every level in integration, it was a turning point.

For example, I chopped a piece of a 'bottle gourd' to demonstrate 'constant theta', a line on the plane to demonstrate 'constant radius', etc.

My students seemed to understand and appreciate calculus.

Using vegetables reduced the complexity and generated interest in the students.

Using an onion to demonstrate volume integral was equivalent to doing 10 similar problems on a black board.

So, I reduced both length and complexity of calculus by using vegetables.
