Description
This introductory course is designed for parents and caregivers seeking a simplified, practical approach to understanding and managing children's behavior using foundational principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). The course breaks down the Four-Term Contingency—setting events, antecedents, behavior, and consequences—to help participants see how everyday situations influence a child’s actions. Participants will learn to identify the four common functions of behavior (sensory, escape, attention, and access to tangibles), understand the purpose behind challenging behaviors, and recognize extinction bursts—temporary increases in behavior when reinforcement is removed. Clear explanations of reinforcement and punishment (both positive and negative) will help caregivers respond more effectively to their child’s needs. In addition, the course introduces user-friendly antecedent strategies, such as setting clear expectations and using visual supports, as well as consequence strategies like redirection and appropriate reinforcement. Through real-life examples and easy-to-implement tools, caregivers will gain confidence in promoting positive behaviors and reducing challenging ones at home, in the community, or in school settings. No prior knowledge of ABA is required—just a willingness to learn and apply new strategies that support both the child and the caregiver.
