The Gershwin Piano Quartet is a formation of four pianists who present their own arrangements of well-known works from the entire history of music on four grand pianos. with its mixture of classical virtuosity and jazzy love of improvisation, its combination of lyrical thoughtfulness and irresistible rhythmic drive, it regularly causes a sensation at its concerts all over the world. The focus of the work of the Gershwin Piano Quartet is always the very personal examination of the selected works, which far exceeds the usual limits of interpretation and ranges from the faithful transcription to the actually new composition, to improvisation and remix techniques.
André Desponds founded the ensemble in Zurich in 1996.
The first concerts still focused entirely on the music of the eponym George Gershwin, which with its stylistic openness is still an important part of the group's repertoire. Over the years, however, the range has expanded steadily and now includes such different music as a version of Rimski-Korsakov's "Schehearzade", which works with many loops and piano preparation techniques, an arrangement of Beethoven's 5, which is condensed into two movements. Symphony, a polytonal expansion of Astor Piazzolla's "Tango Fugue" from "Maria de Buenos Aires" to an integral new version of Gershwin's "Concerto in F".
