In contrast to Beethoven’s iconic piano sonatas, string quartets, and symphonies—which span the entirety of his career—the ten sonatas for violin and piano were composed within a relatively short timespan. With the exception of Op. 96, Beethoven completed the entire set in less than a decade (1798–1805).

According to Wilhelm von Lenz’s familiar division of Beethoven’s output into three stylistic periods, the sonatas straddle the boundary between “early” and “middle.” It is regrettable, however, that “early” has become synonymous with “Mozartean,” as Beethoven’s idiosyncratic voice shines through even in his earliest compositions. Franz Joseph Haydn—a highly innovative composer himself—famously cautioned his protégé against publishing the Piano Trio in C minor (Op. 1, No. 3), fearing that it was too difficult and unconventional. Similarly, a reviewer of the Op. 12 sonatas in the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung observed, “it is undeniable Mr van Beethoven takes a path of his own, but what a bizarre, arduous path it is!” As the historical record makes clear, Beethoven’s early-period works—the Op. 12, Op. 23, and Op. 24 violin sonatas included—are characterized by and an endless search for new sounds and novel techniques.
