A musical journey from darkness to light: Hartmann's relentless clarity, Ravel's fiery sound worlds and Sadikova's visionary tonal language build a bridge from the past to a possible future.
Crises, division, nationalism – the beautiful utopia that a united Europe holds in store is being thrown into disarray. The special recording of the Rachmaninoff International Orchestra under Kent Nagano, together with the violinist Rebekka Hartmann, shows what a power lies in the connection of different European cultures. The musicians have recorded three pieces of the 20th and 21st centuries. Three pieces that show Europe's culture and its strength, especially when looking beyond national borders.
Karl Amadeus Hartmann's "Concerto funebre" from 1939 comes from the darkest time of the continent. Hartmann finds no simple, no dazzling language about his dark present under the Nazi terror in Germany, but interprets his present in a complex and multi-layered way. But he still lets the music build a bridge, quotes a Russian revolutionary funeral march and looks beyond his own cultural circle.
The violin concerto "Stradivari" by the Uzbek composer Aziza Sadikova from 2020 points in the other direction. Inspired by a Soviet TV movie of the 1980s, she takes her music through the Italian Baroque into the present. Draws from the rich cultural heritage of Europe, draws no boundaries and finds in it a beautiful present and future. Maurice Ravel had a similarly open and friendly look at the cultural heritage of his home continent 100 years earlier. His "Tzigane" is inspired by the music of the Roma. But even today one hears in Ravel's piece less the appropriation of such music into a Western European sound image and more the fascination of a Western European for this specific musical expression. It is the joy, the attention and the openness for a foreign culture that characterizes this piece.
