    Brutal Death Metal

After being dormant for nearly 10 years, Italian gore-metal maniacs Antropofagus have awakened. They make their brutal return to the death metal scene with their new full length album Architecture of Lust. Musically their approach has evolved into a more technical style, but sustains the classic death metal pressence of frantic riffing and supreme drumming. Lyrics are inspired by the deranged works of Clive Barker and thrive with gore and sickness. This release is the embodiment of evil and sure to be a top release on many lists in 2012.

Leave it to Björk to make a live album set that can be treated as part of her regular body of work rather than a side note. While Björk fans have occasionally complained about the amount of repackaging of her albums, Voltaic reaffirms just how important the live aspect is to her music, and provides a couple of different perspectives on it as well. Volta sparked a particularly inspired and lavish tour that, arguably, ended up being bigger than the actual album was, but tapped into the most dramatic, primal, and elegant aspects of Björk's art overall.

Besides occasional appearances with Benny Goodman, pianist Teddy Wilson taught summer courses at the famous Juilliard School for music from 1946 to 1952. Despite this prestigious profession, he recorded only irregularly during these years and made most of his money as a staff pianist for WNEW. In the fall of 1952, he went on a brief tour to Scandinavia where he was finally able to record again.

After nearly four decades of writing, recording and touring - either as a sideman or a solo artist - Peter White still seeks out the road not yet traveled. Whether it's new songs, new ideas, new styles or new collaborators, this virtuoso of contemporary jazz, classical, pop and Spanish guitar is at his best when standing on the edge of creative territory waiting to be explored. For White, it's always about the journey and where it will take him, and he's always ready to go. This sense of adventure is at the heart of Here We Go, the 11-song set, co-produced by White and long time collaborator DC (George Benson, Al Jarreau, Bob James, Jeffrey Osborne) includes a range of original material written in the recent and distant past and features guest spots from saxophonists David Sanborn and Kirk Whalum.

Culled from two BBC radio concerts in 1976 and 1979, this is much better than Hillage's studio albums, with the performances offering a funky kick and a real sense of adventure, since he can stretch out with his guitar work. And he does that right from the outset, with "Hurdy Gurdy Glissando," where he quotes the theme from Lawrence of Arabia – a presage of his future involvement in Arabic music, perhaps. Blessed with a band that can not only stop on a dime but also improvise like demons, Hillage produces some astonishingly fluid fretwork, with arrangements that bring in plenty of compound, complex time signatures and key shifts, but which are ultimately elastic in their construction. And he doesn't limit himself to electric guitar – he's not afraid to offer more delicate acoustic sensibilities.

Hailed as ‘the Jascha Heifetz of our day’ (The Globe and Mail, Canada), the violinist James Ehnes is widely considered one of the most dynamic and exciting performers in classical music, appearing regularly with the world’s finest orchestras and conductors. Accompanied here by the BBC Philharmonic under Gianandrea Noseda, Ehnes is the soloist in Bartók’s two violin concertos in which he plays the ‘Marsick’ Stradivarius of 1715, as well as in the viola concerto, performing on the ‘Rolla’ Giuseppe Guadagnini viola of 1793, on loan from the Fulton Collection.

This album is as strong as ever, with great melodies and excellent performances. Great lead guitar parts by Erwin Java. Not to be missed by the band's fans and all Blues-Rock enthusiasts out there.
