    Black Metal

Tulus was one of the many black metal bands that have been pouring out of Norway in the last couple of decades. Formed around 1991, they released three albums in the late nineties, with a style firmly planted in black metal, in particular the vocals and the biting guitar riffing, with the songs usually more in the mid-paced realm rather than the speedier blast-beat sound of others. Tulus did little to stretch the boundaries of traditional Norwegian black metal, but within the confines of the genre they had a pretty effective and distinctive style. Following the breakup of the band two members formed a similarly-styled band, Khold. This is the bands fifth full length album and the second full length album after their 2006 reunion.

On their second full-length album, Chicago's Maps & Atlases defy easy categorization, choosing to walk their own incomparable musical path. Beware and Be Grateful sees the band's trademark experimentalism morphing to suit a more direct–though no less beguiling–songcraft. Fueled by a panoply of sonic influences, the album abounds with novel invention, spanning hymnal harmonies, percolating rhythms, even, in the case of centerpiece track, ''Silver Self,'' a full-on guitar solo (though to be fair, it's unlike any solo previously committed to wax).

Guitarist Ronnie Montrose began his career as a backing musician, playing with Van Morrison, Boz Scaggs, and Edgar Winter. He finally formed his own band in 1973. Named after the guitarist, Montrose also featured vocalist Sammy Hagar, bassist Bill Church, and drummer Denny Carmassi; they released their debut album in 1974, and Church was replaced by Alan Fitzgerald shortly after its release. Released the following year, Paper Money confirmed the band's status as one of the more popular hard rock acts of their era. ~Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine (AMG)

    Genre: Thrash Metal

Faith Or Fear were one of those thrash metal bands who never released more than one album during their original activity in the late eighties. Punishment Area is a decent effort with actually a surprisingly more versatile sound than what some of the other lesser bands put out at the time. There's even some genuine creativity put into the songs although the music on the whole is not too memorable except for some small snippets. Tim Blackman's vocals are a bit on the emotionless side, but they are quite suitable for the music anyway. Punishment Area is not the most generic thrash metal album around but certainly not one of the most significant releases either.

Vocalist Joe LeSte is the only remaining original member, although bassist Lance Eric has been around since the release of From The Hip in 2006

Yet another example of the informal creativity of the Prestige jam session format, in this case bringing together the Lester Young'd tenor stylings of "Vice-President" Paul Quinichette with two Bird-like alto men, John Jenkins and Sonny Red, and the J.J. Johnson-inspired trombone of Curtis Fuller. Jenkins (from Chicago) and Red and Fuller (from Detroit) were newly arrived in New York in 1957, the year this session was taped.

One doesn't necessarily associate punk firebrands the Clash with the radio-ready likes of Third Eye Blind and No Doubt. But in the years since the demise of the Clash, their impact, once localized to the punk underground, has seeped up from the gutter they once championed. ("The truth," rasped Joe Strummer in one of his more memorable couplets, "is known only by guttersnipes.") Burning London affords a dozen-plus popular late-'90s performers the opportunity to tip their hats to the erstwhile scourges of the mainstream. The results, as is common with such tributes, are wildly mixed.
