Taking the unorthodox route of releasing a live album as their debut had reaped great dividends for boogie metal trio Vardis, who quickly found themselves singled out as the New Wave of British Heavy Metal's official pub band. Optimistically, this meant they were being recognized as the best purveyors of '70s-inspired hard boogie, but the harsher reality saw Vardis becoming hopelessly stereotyped as the opening act of choice for other New Wave of British Heavy Metal heavyweights such as Saxon and Iron Maiden.

This album is notable for several reasons. It was the last album before a big hiatus. The first and only studio album with Mark O'Connor on violin. The second and last using the abbreviated band name The Dregs. Steve Howe, guesting on a track. And last but least, the first Dregs album to have vocal pieces. One from Santana band at the time, Alex Ligertwood. Patrick Simmons, of Doobie Brothers fame, provides vocals for the second vocal piece. All in all, Industry Standard is one of the band's strongest albums, although it plays more like a Steve Morse solo record than any other Dregs release.

A celtic caress is another shinning example of Midori's ability to connect with his music and in turn take his listeners to far off times and distant shores. You will be able to lose yourself in the music and transport yourself to a time when the mysticism and wonder of the Celts was powerful. It is a wonderfully arranged albulm and is subtle in its deliverance of the celtic undertone. Its haunting relaxing and evocative and will not disappoint.

By combining his deft skills as a tunesmith, an uncanny knack for catchy melodies, and a romantically appealing lyrical sensibility, Barry Manilow created a commercial package so effective that it ensured phenomenal success as an entertainer throughout the '70s, '80s, and '90s. This 1989 release finds Manilow in fine form, concentrating primarily on ballads swelling with dramatic arrangements (counting the number of ascending key changes from one end of the disc to the other is a fun game) and lyrics that concentrate on the trials and tribulations of relationships.

Not too many years ago it seemed that the art of the male jazz vocalist was heading in the same direction as black and white televisions and 8-track cartridges. One or two notable voices kept the flame alive, but new, young, vocal talent wasn't emerging. Then it started: a slow process, but new male singers began to appear. In the UK the most obvious example of the new breed is the million-selling Jamie Cullum. Anthony Strong's performance on Stepping Out suggests that there's a contender for Cullum's crown.

The later 19th century brought an increasing consciousness of national identity to various ethnic groups in Europe and elsewhere in the world. Antonín Dvořák, born in a Bohemian village where his father was an innkeeper and butcher, followed Smetana as the leading exponent of Czech musical nationalism, firmly within the Classical traditions of Central Europe. His early musical training was followed by employment for some years as a viola player, for a time under Smetana, and then, with the positive encouragement of Brahms, by a life primarily devoted to composition. Dvořák won recognition abroad and rather more grudging acceptance in Vienna. Between 1892 and 1895 he spent some time in the United States of America as director of the new National Conservatory, a period that brought compositions which combine American and Bohemian influence. At home again he was much honoured, resisting invitations from Brahms to move to Vienna in favour of a simple life in his own country. He died in 1904, shortly after the first performances of his last opera, Armida.

It would have been too easy for Graham Coxon to settle into the pop groove he established with his excellent albums Happiness in Magazines and Love Travels at Illegal Speeds, and Coxon has never been one for taking things easy. Ever since he pushed Blur away from Brit-pop and into indie, Coxon has eagerly, earnestly explored new directions, and so it is with his seventh album, The Spinning Top, a loose song cycle that finds the singer/songwriter indulging in a new desire to be a British folk singer in the vein of Bert Jansch.

Seventeenth album by the iconic instrumental trio of Chris Abrahams (piano), Tony Buck (drums) and Lloyd Swanton (bass), celebrating 25 years as a band. Follows 2011’s two-track Mindset and Abrahams’ 2013 solo album Memory Night. Consists of just a single hour-plus piece, which the presser says “return to the territory they are best known for.” Says Swanton: “Mindset reached some pretty intense levels at times, and though we never overtly discussed it, I think that on Open, by contrast, all three of us were taken by the idea of working in an area of great stillness. After a couple of days’ recording, it was clear that the music was leading us in this direction.”
