The winner of the 1970 Eurovision Song Contest, where she represented her homeland, Ireland, singer Dana was born Rosemary Brown in Islington, London, on August 30, 1951. Her family had relocated to the U.K. the previous year from their home in Derry, Northern Ireland, and they returned there when Dana was five. The following year, the little girl won the first of many talent contests and, shortly before her 16th birthday, she was signed to the Decca label's Rex subsidiary.

Fernando Lopes-Graça was a Portuguese composer, conductor and musicologist. Lopes-Graça was influenced by Portuguese popular music, which he also studied, continuing the work of the composer and musicologist Francisco de Lacerda. He was a member of the Portuguese Communist Party and strenuously opposed the Estado Novo and its leader António de Oliveira Salazar. Nielsen composed most of his wind chamber music towards the latter part of his career, when his interests moved from strings to wind instruments. The disc includes the most familiar and widely recorded specimen of Nielsen’s chamber writing, the 1922 Wind Quintet, coupled with lesser known works such as Serenata in Vano, Two Fantasies Op.2 and Canto Serioso. “Both major and minor works are wonderfully played… One can urge immediate acquisition of this disc,” wrote Fanfare. Although, now longer performing publicly, the Athena Ensemble had an excellent career and reputation, “The music is expertly performed with charm, sensitivity and imagination by the Athena Ensemble” said Classic CD (on the Elgar Wind Quintet recording, CHAN 241-33) and this disc is sure to remind listeners of their back catalogue with Chandos.

Giant, monumental, and breath-taking, Clearing the Path to Ascend may be the greatest collection of down-tempo discord that YOB has ever created.Clearing the Path to Ascend feels like standing on the edge of huge chasm, looking into it and not being able to catch your breath. The sheer immensity, the 63 minutes of epic hammering coming out of your speakers is truly stunning. YOB truly ascends on this record. The clean vocals mixed in fit in exactly as they should. The production is cleaner, less hazy. The song writing and progressions are almost perfect.

Doreen Carwithen is better known as the devoted wife, Mary, of the composer William Alwyn. When Chandos brought out this CD in the mid-1990s, it revealed her to be a substantial creative personality in her own right: she emerged as a warmly communicative composer, the style of her work owing more to Walton than to her husband. Her writing is strong and purposeful, sometimes adopting syncopated rhythms and stirring melodies, and always enhanced with brilliant and inventive orchestration. We are therefore delighted to reissue these works and at mid-price for the first time.

There are plenty of reasons to like Stooshe's debut album, which has arrived six months late after accusations of label "interference". Though the London girl-band aren't the badasses they pretend to be – if they were, they'd have refused to allow the track originally known as Fuck Me to be retitled Love Me – they have confidence and skills to spare. Listening to the album is akin to eavesdropping on a conversation between funny, trash-talking women who happen to sing like a trio of Beyoncés: it's a noisy, highly entertaining 50 minutes. There are juvenile ad-libs ("Hey diddle diddle, my cat needs a fiddle!" someone squawks on Love Me, and there's more of that sort of thing elsewhere) and outbreaks of beautiful harmonising, especially on the doo-wop pastiche Slip and the reggaeish My Man Music. And while the protagonist of Hoochi Mumma plays into Tory stereotypes (she's a single mother who's "in love with the social" and spends her benefits on booze), at least the song sets them apart from the media-trained pop hordes.
