Finnish composer Kalevi Aho's music has charted a fascinating course. He began his career, as did so many other Finnish composers, in the shadow of Sibelius, and his Second Symphony plainly demonstrates the debt, with its brooding mix of darkly Finnish melody and tightly contrapuntal construction. But instead of remaining a mere Sibelius clone, Aho broke through to a much more wide-ranging and eclectic musical language, redolent of Shostakovich and Mahler, perhaps, but quite personal, all the same. Symphony No. 7 is the seminal work in this regard, a deliciously satirical piece based on music originally composed for an opera about insects. It contains one of the funniest orchestral foxtrots you're ever likely to hear, and these practically perfect performances reveal the music's every gossamer nuance. If you like listenable contemporary orchestral music, you should get to know Aho.Tracks:David Hurwitz @ Amazon/com
