Andrew Bird has never shied away from whimsy, but Are You Serious the chamber-pop craftsman's first album since marriage and parenthood finds him taking comfort on comparatively solid ground. So while the album retains Bird’s penchant for erudition and eclecticism (the Chinese opera ornaments of “Roma Fade” or the South African shuffle of “The New Saint Jude”), its standouts take him to more modest and familiar places, like the folksy Fiona Apple duet “Left Handed Kisses.” “How did I ever find you/Drifting gently through the gyre of the great Sargasso Sea,” Bird wonders. “Atlantic Ocean got me writing love songs with a common refrain like this one here.”
