God I'm sick and tired of people comparing Beth McKee to Bonnie Raitt. I know they mean well. It's true that Beth McKee exudes a similar strength and self-confidence in her music. But the comparison implies that Beth McKee's music is somehow a derivative of the Raitt's blues-rock sound. Beth McKee's Sugarcane Revival has a sound and vibe that is completely of here own making. She has a top notch command of her voice that is both engaging, and stalwart. Her piano riffs keep their roots in southern music, but they create a huge landscape of sound that makes them sound more like universal anthems than back porch music. Sugarcane Revival is a fan-funded effort and the great thing about that approach to music production is that the artist can be exactly who they want to be. A self-produced artist has opportunity to impress us instead of a following a formula. And Beth McKee has made full use of that artistic freedom by producing a knock out album.
