Burning Saviours came together in 2003 when Mikael Marjanen (guitar) and Martin Wijkström (drums) discussed starting a heavy rock/doom metal band. They named the band after a Pentagram song from the album Day of Reckoning. They teamed up with bassist Fredrik Evertsson and vocalist Andrei Amartinesei to record their first demo entitled Dayterrors in 2004. Amartinesei picked up guitar in addition to vocals for their second demo, The Crusade of Evil, also recorded in 2004. The band soon discarded their previous songs and recorded a new demo, Into the Abyss in late 2004. This demo generated enough buzz to get the band added to the annual German «Doom Shall Rise III» festival in 2005 as well as a record contract with I Hate Records. Their self-titled debut was released in May 2005. Hundus, their second album, was released in June 2006 on I Hate Records. A single was released on Rise Above Records in December 2006. In late 2006, vocalist/guitarist Andrei Amartinesei parted ways with the band and was replaced by Fredrik Andersson on vocals and Henry Pyykkö on guitar. In October 2007 their third album, Nymphs and Weavers, will be released by Transubstans Records.

If there was ever a Battle of the Retro Stars, I’d like to see Witchcraft defend their title against fellow Swede’s Burning Saviors. The winner would go on to carry Pentagram’s torch while Bobby Liebling figures out if he wants to continue the ‘Ram or just succumb to the vices that have plagued him for far too long. So yeah, Burning Saviors’ self titled debut is loaded with a heavy “Forever My Queen”/”Twenty Buck Spin” vibe. And like Witchcraft, it’s easy to pass this album off as a relic from the past. They’ve got that warm, analogue sound – I half expected to hear the telltale pops and crackles of vinyl while listening to this. Put this all together and there’s nothing there to elevate Burning Saviors above the crowd. I mean, it’d be easy to dismiss them as a Witchcraft cover band (who got their start as a Pentagram cover band). Except there’s a ton of charm to Burning Saviors’ doomy rock, like during the breakdown towards the end of “Seeing Is Believing,” or the flute playing on “Spread Your Wings,” or the “Generals gathered in their masses” sound of “What’s the Point.” They’re one of those bands you can’t help liking. The songs are just plain good. So don’t come to Burning Saviors looking for innovation or originality. But if you want some modern day classic doom, one with dedication to tradition, you can’t go wrong with this four piece.

The second album by the Swedish Heavy Rockers shows a more mature band with an increased self confidence. Fear not though, the music is still catchy, warm and folksy 60/70s vintage Rock music with clear parallels to SABBATH, PENTAGRAM and JETHRO TULL, all filtered through the enthusiasm and fantastic song writing skill that made their self titled debut so much more than just another retro album. 9 amazing songs that will win the hearts of fans old and new! Killer vocals that would make Zeeb Parkes proud! A lot of the riffs sound like stuff lifted right off all the best obscure underground 70s rock albums.

Like bands like Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Warhorse, Pentagram, Jethro Tull, and Grand Funk Railroad? This album features nine tracks of good hard rocking fun, chock full of enough retro guitar riffs, organ, and the occasional flute to satisfy most lovers of early 70's hard rock. Frontman Fredrik Andersson handles lead vocals, acoustic guitar, flute, and organ. Ultimately it's the thick and meaty riffs of Henry Pyyjkkц (who also delivers some tasty solos) and Mikael Marjanen that really make this album, giving these songs a heavy and doomy vibe at times that pushes all the right buttons. This is the first release with a new line-up, so hopefully the personnel changes settle down as this band seems to have all the talent to make a run at the retro hard rock market
