I normally do not like "Live" albums, but Calvin's voice and musical style lends itself well to this format. This album features some of the best rockin' blues songs Calvin has done. Listen to Calvin Russell when you have some time alone and are in one of those moods where you just don't know quite what you want to hear. This Austin, Texas based singer-songwriter has had many life experiences which come out in his music in ways that are sometimes depressing, sometimes critical, sometimes cynical, sometimes hopeful, sometimes beautiful, and sometimes, just rockin'!
Crossroads opens with a great blues tune, "Where the Blues Get Born", that sets the mood for what follows. There's a great video of this number on YouTube, but be sure and buy this CD here so Calvin can eat! Another great "bluesy" song on this CD is "Rats and Roaches", which is just plain fun while still slyly providing a little social commentary. A slower, darker, but equally satisfying blues number is "My Way". "Soldier" provides a great guitar intro and carries on with some timely political observations, a dash of cynicism, but a whole lot of hope in the end. Note that "Soldier" has now been compiled by several individuals with accompanying video of scenes in Iraq. Just do a search on You Tube, and you will find some very moving videos made to Calvin's song. Calvin's cover of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" wraps things up on a hopeful note. After all, in the end, hope is what is all about, isn't it? ~Amazon
