A work for such forces as Casella's so-called Triple Concerto for Piano, Violin, Cello and Orchestra, composed in 1933, cannot but invite comparison with Beethoven's Triple Concerto, and Casella was quick to call attention to differences. "While Beethoven deliberately gave each of the three instruments…a specifically bravura and brilliant function, in my Concerto the three solo instruments form a little block of sound which is contrasted with the orchestral mass exactly as the concertino is contrasted with the ripieno in the old concerto grosso. The form of the first movement recalls for the last time in my work the bi-thematic structure of Beethoven, but it is completely changed by a third theme which appears at the beginning of the introduction and which is combined with the others in the symphonic development." The choice of performing forces owes less to any former work, however, than to the fact that, from 1930, Casella, with violinist Alberto Poltronieri and cellist Arturo Bonucci, performed worldwide as the Trio Italiano; while the resurrection of the concerto grosso neatly combined an Italian model with the neo-Classical turn Modernism had been taking over the preceding decade or so and forecasts similar works by Vaughan Williams and Bloch. The concerto's often harsh dissonance indicates a calculated truculence lending a fillip to the work's already robust gait and has no functional significance in its straightforward diatonic design. Of the central Largo, Casella justly notes that it is "without precedent in my other works because of its relative serenity and its luminous, soft transparency, which is probably due to the Sienese landscape where it was written." The concluding Rondò is a gigue, or tarantella, in modo populare, though its themes are original. The concerto received its premiere on November 17, 1933, at the Berlin Staatsoper with the Trio Italiano under the baton of Erich Kleiber.
