Excellent second album, undoubtely their best one, by this misguided Pittsburgh band. After a weak glam/pop/mainstream first album, fantastic guitar man Warren King came aboard and changed drastically Diamond Reo's style to a "take-no-prisoners" Hard Rock with an incredibly acid guitar sound. Then unleashed one of the better mid-70's HR albums, unbeliably ignored for many collectors of the style. After one more album, the band broke up, with guitarist Norman Nardini carving out a long career as a blues rocker.

Slapping away any lingering memory of their lightweight self-titled debut, Pittsburgh's Diamond Reo returned with the raunchy riff-fest that is 1976's Dirty Diamonds. Packed with nine ass kickin' originals and an appropriate cover of The Beatles' "Helter Skelter" to close the album, the band inspire some serious air guitar mayhem on hard rockin' killers like "Power", funky "Loverboy", melodic "Mamma Let Your Love", and the balls to the wall "Bad News".
"Dirty Diamonds," indeed - each of these hard rock gems comes coated in a grimy layer of sweat 'n' sleaze, Diamond Reo proving themselves masters of hard rockin' raunch on this overlooked set. Locking into a low-gear grind and staying there for much of the album's duration, tracks like "Power," "Loverboy," "All Over You" and "Scratch My Back" ooze with such debauched carnality, that after dropping the needle on Dirty Diamonds you might start throwing dollar bills at your turntable. The Steel Town band also picks up the pace for "It Ain't What You Say It's What You Do," "Bad News" and an appropriately manic cover of "Helter Skelter," while retaining the cat-callin' attitude that hallmarks the album. For fans of vintage smut-rock, Dirty Diamonds is a precious metal of rare brilliance that's well worth mining for.
