CPO has yet again magnificently endorsed the modern musical world, adding two long-neglected gems from the late classical era to the recording catalogue. Here, in CPO's new release of Anton Eberl's two piano concertos, we have been given the privilege of listening to Eberl's formidable piano music, for which he was better known in his day. A fine pianist and composer of several operas, symphonies among other works, Eberl's piano playing had an unusual fire and facility. Best remembered as a composer for the keyboard than for his operas, he carved and shaped his music with confused modulations, while mixing old and new themes, so as to provide maximum effect. CPO's latest recording of his Piano Concertos in E flat and C major (Opp.40 & 32 respectively) has certainly shown this unusual element of Eberl's unique writing. Paolo Giacometti, the soloist of the E flat major concerto, provides all that is required of a soloist handling such an idiosyncratic concerto played on an Austrian fortepiano of around 1810. Not only does he play with sparkling effect, but accurately interprets what a Viennese reviewer had heard two centuries ago. In this recording, Giacometti gives his listeners the concerto's `extreme freshness, radiance' and `lively' beauty with brilliant and dazzling execution. Riko Fukuda, who plays the second concerto in C on this disc, does full justice to the composer and this engaging piece. Although her playing is quite distinctive from that of Giacometti's, Fukuda nonetheless gives a moving interpretation. New to me, Die Kolner Akademie, under the direction of MA Willes, play with vibrant colour. For the piano concerto buff, this latest CPO recording is a welcome addition to any CD library. Let's hope that CPO may one day deliver Eberl's remaining piano concertos. A most delectable recording!Tracks:Luke Agati @ Amazon.com
