The premiere of Enescu's Poème roumain, Op. 1, was the first of many triumphs for the 16-year-old composer, who had been studying in Paris with Massenet and Fauré since 1890. Edouard Colonne conducted the first performance at Théâtre du Chatelet, and the work's Romantic evocation of the Romanian national character caught the imagination of the sophisticated Parisian audience to the extent that Enescu would thereafter always be well received in that hard-to-please city.Tracks:
The music never strays far from that of Enescu's mentors. The sound world of Massenet, who knew well how to marshal colorful orchestral effects and nationalistic themes, is especially evident in the Poème, but there are already qualities that would become trademarks of the composer's original style. Most interesting is the sparing but highly evocative use of a wordless male chorus. The first part of this lengthy tone poem (nearly 30 minutes) depicts an evening in the Romanian countryside, and the atmospheric vocalizations of the men's voices creates a palpable sense of timelessness and expansiveness. The second part evokes the day of a festival in plainly graphic terms, all the more charming for their naive ingenuousness. A storm in the night (very Rossinian) is succeeded by a masterful evocation of sunrise, followed by a kaleidoscopic medley of Rumanian dances, one of which, in a limping waltz time, is particularly striking. At the climax, the dances weave together in counterpoint, and broaden into a richly (and busily) accompanied anthemic peroration.
