Finntroll has evolved from their humble, oddball beginnings into the mighty metal warriors that come up in nearly every conversation even remotely involving the term folk metal. Sure, sure, acts like Skyclad, Mägo de Oz and Cruachan have been doing the whole folk metal thing for longer, but Finntroll has morphed from this strangely goofy band from Finland with lyrics in Swedish and lyrics about trolls into a worldwide phenomenon and the absolute leaders of humppa folk metal (but still with Swedish lyrics about trolls). Finntroll has released a demo, six full length albums and three EP's since their formation in 1997, but 2014 sees the release of the band's very first live album, Natten Med De Levande Finntroll.Musicians:
Since the band waited seventeen years to release their first live album, I guess they felt the need to really make it count. With nineteen tracks and nearly eighty minutes of music, Finntroll attempt to capture their enigmatic live show with a host of fan favorites. Natten Med De Levande Finntroll was recorded in 2008 at Melkweg Concert Hall in Amsterdam. While each Finntroll album has its own distinctive flavor of trollish folk metal, like the mug swinging Jaktens Tid or the more mature atmospheres on Ur Jordens Djup, hearing all of these songs lined up really shows the consistent nature of Finntroll's songwriting. This band has persevered through some pretty nasty times; from their original guitarist's death by falling off a bridge in 2003 to their original vocalist being forced to leave the band from a tumor affecting his vocal chords. With no original members remaining, bassist Tundra, guitarist Skrymer and keyboardist/guitarist Trollhorn have not looked back, maintaining a consistent sound throughout the years despite the lineup changes. The worth of this album really depends on how much you like Finntroll. Being a live album, you should expect to hear some crowd noise between tracks and few segments during choruses. The band's crowd interaction is passable, as it seems like there's some chemistry, but either Finntroll didn't talk to the crowd much or most of it was edited out. The crowd seems to be the most responsive during the band's more folk inspired segments, which is understandable, because that's why we listen to Finntroll, isn't it? With Natten Med De Levande Finntroll, the band offers a hearty mix of tavern ditties and dark atmospherics, winding through their entire career.
The band's performance is tight, accentuated by the driving rhythm section. The guitar riffs are solid, and just a little low in the mix for my liking. This seems to be fixed during a few riff-driven segments, like the extremely catchy end of “Jaktens Tid” or the rollicking gallops during “Midnattens Widunder”. Another minor issue is that the keyboards seem a little off during the intro to “Nattfödd”, but it's more than made up for during “Eliytres” and “Trollhammaren”. The vocalist, Vreth, really captures the sound of both the early and later period material, with a mix of mid-range screams and throaty barks. The band shows that they are tight as hell and are clearly having a good time, as evidenced by the hearty group vocals during choruses. If Finntroll decided to wait seventeen years to release their first live album, I'm glad that the performances is as solid as it is on Natten Med De Levande Finntroll. Aside from a few missteps, the band's performance is stellar and enjoyable. If you haven't been able to catch to catch Finntroll live, this album should give you a good idea of what you're missing out on. This is absolutely essential material for fans of the band, but f you're not a fan of their albums this won't persuade you otherwise.
