Ginastera was Argentina's most famous composer. In the early part of his career he composed music with strong reflections of the folk music of the country. Later, by the time he wrote this 1969 violin concerto, he had adopted a more international, often atonal, style. The form of the concertoo is strikingly original, as is the music itself. The concerto begins with a cadenza. Then there are six variations on music from the cadenza, in the form of etudes, followed by a coda. The six variation-etudes each explore a single compositional and playing techniques: chords, thirds, other intervals, arpeggi, harmonics, and the 24 quarter tones. The middle movement, adagio, reduces the orchestra to a 22-instrument chamber ensemble, designed as a hommage to the first desk players of the New York Philharmonic, which had commissioned the concerto. The finale is a speedy "scherzo pianissimo" and perpetual motion on the famous 24th etude of Paganini. The concerto is a fine work, which impresses the listener with each hearing. It is also exceptionally difficult to play. That and the very intellectual content of the composition keeps it from being a popular favorite, but it is a masterful composition.Tracks:
