William Christie reported in an interview that he and violinist Hiro Kurosaki looked to Handel's operatic arias as a guide to interpret the composer's violin sonatas. And, in fact, these are wondrously lyrical and often potently dramatic performances. The long cantilena that opens the sunny Sonata in D (Op. 1, No. 13) is sweetly sung, while the Finale swaggers along like a cocky character from Handel's Julius Caesar. Kurosaki's tone is rich and his legato seamless – a far cry from the thin tone one often hears from period string instruments.

Christie plays a clear, pearly toned, French-style, two-manual harpsichord, except in two of the sonatas, where he employs a chamber organ.

Virgin's recording is outstanding, capturing Kurosaki's warm tone in an airy ambiance and balancing it ideally with the keyboard instruments. Andrew Farach-Colton
