Like a lot of the diagonal musical career moves I’ve made, working with Lisa came about indirectly from a Robert Wyatt connection. Robert wrote some lyrics for a Russian tune. I liked his lyrics but bigheadedly reckoned I could write a more interesting tune. In the end, the only part of the lyrics that remained was the title and first two lines: HALF THE TIME it's pantomime/ Half the time it’s only make believe… Then Eccentric Streatham Guitarist Mark Hewins wrote some completely different words and asked Lisa to sing the song for a demo. I was immediately knocked out by the sound of her voice and the fact she could sing the notes right - it wasn't a particularly simple tune.
Mark, Lisa and I started collaborating. I had a lot of tunes already written and we used to hang out at Mark’s drinking tea (me horizontal on the sofa for the most part), collectively wnting words for them.
Mark then went on to other things, mainly getting his studio together, but Lisa and I continued to send each other bits and pieces of words, music, nightmares - even when I went to live in France for six months. I have a good time fitting music to the angular snippets she writes - it's a lot more interesting than composing for neat and tidy verses that already scan perfectly and force the music into a regular rhythm.
After a couple of years of toing and froing we started recording at Delta, near Canterbury, taking our time, doing a few songs at each session. A lot of the first CD’s worth (yes, we have a whole stack of songs left over for the next one) is midi-based, with some mighty fuzz bass here and there and guest appearances by other real musicians blowing and hitting things. We used minimal equipment - a tiny Yamaha keyboard that has about two usable sounds. If this record is the runaway success it deserves to be I will probably buy a second tiny Yamaha keyboard… ~H.
