Hosokawa has a highly distinct sound to his music, especially when it comes to his orchestral works, characterized by eerie strings and occasional bursts of percussions, leaving me with chills. It's easy to draw a parallell with Scelsi in compositional style, although Hosokawa's music is far more textural and detailed. It all sounds like the whole orchestra is about to break at any moment, like an animal squealing as it is about to die or a thin mist. Because it is in fact difficult to identify a structure to the music or even recognising it leading anywhere as a whole, rather, it's just vaguely floating there, occupying a vast amount of space.Tracks:
Although only the first piece on here (Koto-Uta for voice and koto) is strictly traditional japanese folk music, the orchestral pieces are remarkably japanese-sounding in style as well.
These four pieces of music are subtle, careful and fragile, yet moving and beautiful. It's a gripping, engaging and tensious experience and definitely my favourite collection of contemporary classical music at that, as well as a great representation of Toshio Hosokawa's music.albertf98 @ rateyourmusic.com
