There is much to celebrate in Joy Crookes' second full-length album. The 12-track Juniper is understated, but rich with everything we have come to love about the Crookes—and plenty more. For megafans, this album has been a long time coming. Not only has it been four years since her debut, Skin, but Crookes has also been slowly teasing its follow-up by dropping six singles over the last year in a waterfall-style release. Fans of Amy Winehouse, Jorja Smith, and even Marvin Gaye will see why the 26-year-old multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter is such a source of pride for South London.

Juniper exists on a plane between contrasts—new and old; pop and soul; emotion and groove—and benefits greatly from live instrumentation that feels increasingly rare in today's pop landscape. The album also reunites much of the Skin team: Blue May behind the mixing deck and Amy Langley once again arranging the gorgeous, fundamental string sections on "Brave," "Carmen," "Mathematics" and "Mother." Opener "Brave," one of Juniper's strongest tracks, is a timeless piece that could just as easily fit on Marvin Gaye's What's Going On. Rappers Kano and Vince Staples feature on two standout tracks, "Mathematics" and "Pass the Salt," respectively. The album closes with "Paris," a beautiful ballad that allows space for a muted, upright piano to breathe and for the listener to reflect over its six minutes.

Crookes sounds more mature and polished, yet stays true to her winning formula: rich vocals, emotive lyrics, finely tuned production and powerful instrumental arrangements. Juniper adds twelve new tracks to her already impressive discography and is certainly worth a listen from start to finish—and then maybe once more for good measure.
