Julie Crochetiere might be better known as Julie C these days, but one thing that doesn’t change is her commitment to writing and singing solid music. The Montreal-born artist released her first album, titled A Better Place, four years ago now, for which she garnered several award nominations and sold over 30,000 albums independently. She’s finally set to follow it up with Steady Ground, scheduled to drop March 1, 2011.
Although Julie’s roots in a group called Sugar Jones originally pushed her in the pop direction, her sophomore outing offers a more mature sound and is a true representation of the woman behind the voice. The French-Canadian chanteuse successfully delivers a contemporary soul vibe blended with a hint of club music and sex appeal.
The album was produced by Ron Lopata, who has worked in the past with such artists as Tomi Swick and Lindi Ortega, and includes tracks that range from soulful clap-alongs to energetic, funky songs, all inspired by Julie’s real-life experiences.
In the fall of 2010, the single Tomorrow was released from the album, to give fans a hint of what was to come. As a crafted verse-chorus song that was nominated for a Smooth Jazz Award in 2010, it was inspired by Julie’s first trip to Jamaica. The video for the single was directed by Canadian singer-songwriter Jeremy Fisher and is currently in rotation on MuchMoreMusic.
