What does Loudness have to offer for us today? Well, “Breaking the Taboo” is the twenty-first album released by the band, which is quite the accomplishment. The line-up here is solid, the best Loudness has had. Does this stack up?Loudness official homepage
Unfortunately, it doesn’t. Akira Takasaki is an amazing riff writer, and this album contains some of those amazing riffs, but much of it seems like filler. The drums are performed great; Munetaka Higuchi is underrated, just like the whole band. Masayoshi Yamashita plays the bass guitar well and Minoru Niihara sings his trademark vocals here. This should make the album good. Too bad the songs themselves aren’t very exciting.
The title track is all right, nothing really special. It’s everything you’d expect which sometimes can be a problem. “Brutal Torture” is by far the best song on the album. The riff itself is quite unique and enjoyable. Everything here just seems to work. Akira’s solo is of course amazing. “Don’t Spam Me” has some interesting moments, but once again it’s nothing to get excited about.
The rest of the album isn’t memorable which is a negative. Sure the songs aren’t awful, just a little on the boring side. Loudness fans will find something to like here, but casual fans won’t find it amazing. “Breaking the Taboo” isn’t bad, just boring. Get it if you’re a fan of the band any looking to complete you’re collection.
