Matt Joe Gow - Seven Years (2016)

Recorded and produced by Matt Joe Gow and Andy Pollock, ‘Seven Years’ takes its title from the chorus lyrics of ‘Steady Life’ from Matt’s debut album `The Messenger’. ‘The Messenger’ received critical acclaim and forms a solid base, after a long hiatus, for this sophomore solo release. Seven years have also changed some songs. Take ‘Down River’, for example. First recorded during ‘The Messenger’ sessions, the song evolved through years of touring and is reborn on ‘Seven Years’ as a different beast, with driving rhythmic elements set against the backdrop of shimmering alt country tones.

And time alters people, too, of course. On ‘Georgia Rose’, Matt speaks of the death of Matt’s grandfather and his memories of him as a child. ‘Right by You’ documents the end of a long-term relationship that had begun in Matt’s hometown of Dunedin, New Zealand and finished in Melbourne. By contrast, ‘Runnin’ on Time’ is the sound of a band on the road, trying to win over new audiences with some raucous rock ‘n’ roll.
