For their second release on Ondine, the acclaimed Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir under chief conductor Daniel Reuss perform Psalm settings by Felix Mendelssohn and Estonian composer Cyrillus Kreek. The first release on Ondine from the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir was an ‘Editor’s Choice’ in Gramophone and awarded ‘Disc of the Year’ by German weekly DIE ZEIT.
Cyrillus Kreek, a graduate of the St Petersburg Conservatory and a collector of folk songs, laid the foundation for Estonian professional music.
This unique coupling highlights the familiarities in vocal and harmonic setting between Mendelssohn and Kreek.
Composer: Cyrillus Kreek, Felix Mendelssohn
Conductor: Daniel Reuss
Orchestra/Ensemble: Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir
Reviews: Mendelssohn’s seven psalms are well suited to the sweet and sunny tone of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir. It might be that the declamatory “Make a Joyful Noise Unto the Lord” could be sung with the same brio one expects at the beginning of the “Italian” Symphony, and that the dramatic “Why Do the Nations” is a bit too demure, but their excellent blend and intonation, combined with their ability to make one believe what they are singing, give more satisfaction than one finds in either Roger Norrington’s glib performances (Decca) or Helmuth Riling’s academic readings by his Stuttgart Bach Collegium (Hänssler). With the Estonian choir we find something genuine, without self-conscious scholarship on one hand, and something rooted in a great tradition with no hint of pop alloys on the other.
The psalm settings of Cyrillus Kreek, Nordic rather than Germanic or Slavic in character, unfold with the cool, monumental dignity one associates with Sibelius. The melodic material, very folklike, and often sung in octaves, is quite moving. More moving still are his arrangements of five sacred folk songs. The temperaments of composer, conductor, and chorus seem to be in perfect accord with the architecture of the Haapsalu Dome in which these beautiful anthems are sung. One is reminded of Ruskin’s idea that architecture tells us most about the soul of a culture. It seems that the Estonian works and all of the performances, gentle, profound, demure, state his case persuasively.
