The music of the Milhaud's Symphony No. 10 is typical of the composer's work at the time. Its polytonality and frequent recourse to spiky melodic lines makes it a work that often moves in jolts rather than smooth flow. Its harmonic language is polytonal, meaning that different lines of the music are in different keys from one another. This results in a high level of dissonance whose effect ranges from charmingly spicy to dense and hard-edged. The work remains tonal, though the almost constant presence of tones from remote keys tends to obscure the tonal center. The mood is, on the whole, muscular and positive.Tracks:
Symphony No. 11 was commissioned by the Dallas (Texas) Public Library and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, which premiered it on December 12, 1960. The key signature indicates that Milhaud's music was then becoming more tonally based, with his trade-mark polytonality now serving the purpose of strengthening and extending the main tonality. The symphony is unusually strong in passionate emotions in the opening and closing movements, while the calm, relatively static middle movement sets them off. The strong feelings in the symphony as a whole are reminiscent of musical Romanticism and explain the subtitle. The symphony has been well received.
Symphony No. 12 was commissioned by the University of California at Davis, and was premiered there by the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Enrique Jorda. The campus has long been known for the excellence of its agricultural training and research, and has significantly contributed to agricultural innovations. Milhaud, coming from the sunny and agriculturally rich Provence region is France, had an attraction to the subject of growing crops. Over forty years earlier he had even set the words of a Farm Machinery catalogue to music. The association produced one of the happiest of symphonies: Just look at the titles of the movement: Pastoral, Fast and Happy, Peaceful, and Luminous. They tell it all.
