This EMI Classics release from 2003 features the Sabine Meyer Wind Quintet in works by five contemporary composers: Edison Denisov, Niccoló Castiglioni, Toshio Hosokawa, Michael Obst and Alexander Raskatov. It's a wide array of styles, and since I came across this disc while exploring the music of Raskatov and Hosokawa, I'll limit my review to their pieces.

Alexander Raskatov's "Paradise Lost?" (1999) is a here playful, there elegaic work in five movements, the titles of which allude to the forest: "Oh, Wald", "Wo is der Fluss", "Zum Gras", "Die Klage der Vogel" and "Das Abendlicht". The final movement is a chorale that continually runs out of steam, only to start up again. In its clear contours and the motoric thrust of its more upbeat parts, I think this piece will appeal especially to fans of Stravinsky. And in the way it combines accessibility for a subscriber audience with great depth, I find "Paradise Lost?" a successful work.

Toshio Hosokawa is recognized as the greatest Japanese composer in the generation after Toru Takemitsu. Like that great forebear, there's not much identifiably Japanese to Hosokawa's music, except maybe lack of allegro time. He sounds to me much more like the European high modernist composer Michael Jarrell. His single-movement Variations for Wind Ensemble (1994) have a similar distinctive use of low dynamic and ur-tonal feel. The piece is an organic growth process, with each variation longer, louder and more confident than the last, but each fading into silence. I don't think this is one of Hosokawa's more memorable works, however, and I've been more impressed by his concertos.
