Without a doubt this is one of the literally the very best US heavy-psych rock albums, ever! This was a perfect combination of classic, early Damnation Of Adam Blessing-like psychedelic heavy rock with sharp riffing attack of early Grand Funk Railroad, Dust or Bang - combined with spacey guitar sounds, haunting melodies and some progressive influences. As a result it sounded more like the 1969, than in 1972! Released on a small, independent Starshine label and pressed in 1000 copies (with poster) nowadays the complete, original LP reaches a value of 1000$ and it must be said - fully deserved! This CD has been carefully remastered from the original source and sounds better and cleaner than ever; without annoying noises and compression. Enjoy!

Based out of Alliance, OH (in the eastern part of the state about 30 miles from Akron, which is a polite way of saying in the middle of nowhere), Morly Grey were a power trio whose sole album, 1972's The Only Truth (the first and only LP from local label Starshine Records), has become a much-bootlegged collector's item among fans of classic psychedelia and prog rock. For years, folks speculated that The Only Truth actually dated from 1969, and the album's sound and approach do seem a bit behind its times; Cream and Blue Cheer are clear influences here (without Cream's heavier blues angles or Blue Cheer's monolithic ferocity), though one can also hear the shadows of latter-day acts such as Grand Funk Railroad and the James Gang in Tim Roller's guitar work, which shifts back and forth between gutsy power chords and graceful lead figures. The ghosts of a number of noted power trios can also be heard in the limber basslines of Mark Roller and drummer Paul Cassidy's firm rhythms and colorful fills (Bob LaNave took over for Cassidy on three cuts, including on the 17-minute title track). The album's artwork suggests that Morly Grey may have been an early Jesus Rock band, but a listen to The Only Truth confirms otherwise, as the band seem far more interested in slightly trippy ponderings about brotherhood, love, and the war in Vietnam than either God or His son. As is the case with so many prog/psych collectors items, the rarity of The Only Truth (and the fact it was created by an unknown band from a small Midwestern town) is what makes genre obsessives salivate as much as the music, and while this is no lost masterwork, it's strong, well-crafted stuff for the era. The production is simple but clear and straightforward, the interplay between the musicians is genuinely impressive, and if Tim Roller's guitar meanders on the extended tracks, his chops were very good and his bandmates were clearly a match for his talents. If Morly Grey had been on a bigger label or based out of a bigger town, they might have gone far, and The Only Truth deserves a wider hearing outside of collectors' circles.

The genuine sound and drive of the 70s, originally recorded in 1971 and released in 1972 on Starshine Records (LP 69000). Top-rate power trio from Ohio: brothers Mark and Tim Roller and drummer Paul Cassidy. Absolutely original music, blending minimalistic hard'n heavy (rivaling & reminding mainly Grand Funk) with virtuoso guitar solos pre-dating guitar demi-gods of the 80s (Yngwie Malmsteen et al. for example), with melodic mesmerizing and moody ventures into acid music of the Doors. The band is extremely creative and talented, feeling at ease with most complicated and sofisticated rythms and jamming freely.
The style is difficult (if not impossible!) to describe: its progressive rock, it's psychedelic, and it's very hard!
Perhaps not the greatest singers, but pleasant unison singing (in the tradition of prog) without disgraceful nasal howling of British invasion
A true masterpiece, 8 remastered tracks, plus 5 bonus tracks (3 previously unreleased), excellent artwork - Sundazed Music did a great job.
Another jewel saved for posterity.
Six stars!!!
Morly Grey had only one album, titled The Only Truth. Originally released in 1972 on the Starshine label, it was a rare collector's item for years. Now it is available as a reissued and digitally remastered CD by Speed Label. The first few original releases came packaged with a poster, which is reproduced beautifully from the original artwork as a bonus to this LP. This great rock record is one of those amazing classics that you never heard, wish you did, and then wonder why you have not. The music sounds unexpectedly advanced considering the tracks were committed to tape in 1972. You will hear rock, psychedelic sounds reminiscent of The Doors and Jimi Hendrix, and jazz-rock fusion, like on the track "Our Time." For a trio, their sound was an electrifying full exciting new sound that was just starting to make its way into the consciousness of young adventurous musicians. Bands like this jump-started the beginning of many major changes in music. The title track, which is a flat out progressive rock tour de force running over 17 minutes long, brings you full circle from a rocking entrance, to a spaced out eerie middle section, then to a meaningful powerful ending. I do not want to imply that it is something that you would hear today. It sounds more like a formative free form track that develops and comes to a head like a musical eruption exploding from the core of their base sound. The group works very hard to maintain and expand this format in many of their songs. It comes as a shock that they did not continue to record after such a successful recording session as this. One never knows what the circumstances may have been at the time though. One thing I do know, they left their ineradicable mark on early progressive rock music.
This album is great, there may have been others but this takes you back to a place of joy and happiness. This was beautifully done, each track rolled right into the next. Just one reminder of where music came from and where it has gone to. Any person should enjoythis cd or album. My hat is off to those gentlemen and may they return with part 2 the continuation of smooth music to groove to. No matter who, what, when or where, you've got to it. Best music I've heard in long time, there are definitely other musicians who can and did offer great music such as: AWB, Kool and the gang, Q, David Bowie, Steppenwolf, Cream and Edgar Winters to name a few. I feel that MORLY GREY is ranked right up there with the aforementioned. Let's hear more!…
