Except for a rather extensive hiatus in the Nineties, Germany's Paradox has been at their game for more than 25 years. Their most productive time, however, has been in the last five years with three albums, Tales of the Weird being their most recent.
The strength of Paradox has always been their commitment to true speed and thrash metal, and it continues on Tales of the Weird. They've got the immense riffage, speed, melody, and stinging guitar solos that made the genre so brilliant in it's early Eighties form. Paradox doesn't flirt with the latest modern nuances like death vocals or the harsh hardcore side of things. Basically, while you wait for the next Metallica album, you should simply buy Tales of the Weird and be satisfied.
Actually, considering the depth and strength of several songs including the title track, Fragile Alliance, and Brainwashed, you might even call this 'epic' thrash metal. These songs are simply immense and bombastic, making Paradox like the Rhapsody of Fire of thrash metal. If these songs don't convince you, their speedy interpretation of Rainbow's A Light in the Black; it's a bullet train at full fury. Essentially, Paradox stays true to the melodic heavy thrash metal genre and does it quite well. Easily recommended. ~ review by Craig Hartranft
