Twenty years ago Rainer Tempel was still a student in Nuremberg (jazz piano, diploma thesis in 1998 about Vince Mendoza). Twenty years ago the first album of the Rainer Tempel Big Band ("forward + back", 1996) also appeared. Since then, much has happened: Rainer Tempel founded a whole series of other bands, from the trio to the Elftett strength; He composed for classical musicians and jazz ensembles such as the Zurich Jazz Orchestra and the big bands of HR, RIAS, SWR and NDR (with whom he even won an echo jazz for "Petite Fleur", ACT 2014). He was a keyboarder in various bands - with the jazz / hip-hop trumpeter Joo Kraus, the singer / songwriter Ron Spielman or the Dieter Thomas Kuhn band; And he gave his experiences further: as a professor at music colleges in Lucerne and Stuttgart, he even took over as head of the Institute for Jazz & Pop in 2013 - in short: he has developed into a successful, sought-after and versatile musician.
The title of his new album: Sophistication reflects this story, which could only be indicated here. Sophistication - that means: refinement, but also: experience. And this is a good thing: it is the fifth album with the Rainer Tempel Big Band - and a kind of comeback, because for the past 14 years he had not (s.o.) had the time to work with and for his own big band. "Only when we started again did I realize how much that is the core of my activity. I've been doing this for more than twenty years, without realizing it. And when I look at the old charts, it's all about making things grow, and the winds turn. Then something can develop.
