The multi-instrumentalist, Robert Berry, has released a new solo album. If this name doesn’t ring a bell yet, then let me refresh your memory. His noticeable debut album was released in 1978 with the band Hush. After three more albums and his first solo album, he was taken on by Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer. He was given the impossible task of replacing Greg Lake. They pieced together an over produced, typical 80s style album, “To the Power of Three”, under the band name of 3. After a few more solo albums, he is now back with Alan Fitzgerald (Night Ranger) and a few musicians of Sammy Hagar forming the band Alliance. He released four albums with them. His renewed GTR project with Steve Howe (whereby he was acting as the Steve Hackett replacement) never really made it off the ground. Several years ago (2001), he made a Christmas album under the name of The Christmas People called ‘Sounds Like Christmas’. Robert was also a permanent producer at the Magna Carta label.
This ‘The Dividing Line’ follows the direction of his most recent material. It’s less Progressive, more Classic Rock (or AOR) but, there is one noticeable difference…the songs are better and have hit potential. The melodies are more recognizable and more accessible, thus making the album sound better than some of the previous ones. The best songs are “Faith”, “The Dividing Line” and “A Life Worth Livin’”, just to name a few. On the whole, this can be called an excellent album that will appeal to the fans of traditional AOR.
