    Label:Olympia - Date:1999

After looking at the discography of Shebalin's works, I wondered when Shebalin's strings quartets will be available. Before Olympia's intrepid Shebalin project (one of many of this label), acquiring Shebalin's music was in some ways impossible (Melodiya after all was not an easy label to follow). But this British label fills up the void admirably with up to six discs devoted to the composer's music. This first volume of Shebalin's string quartets cannot be any more important for artistic and historical reasons.

Vissarion Yakovlevich Shebalin (1902-1963) had written nine string quartets as well as a string trio (among the composer's most popular works). As in the case of, say, Myaskovsky (his professor of composition at the Moscow Conservatory), Kabalevsky, Shostakovich, and even Vainberg, chamber music became among Shebalin's chief oeuvres. His well-assured, well crated First Quartet (1924), like that of Kabalevsky's (1928), shows signs of Myaskovsky's influence in its melancholic and reflective utterance (especially its first two movements where the ideas are lucid). The Finale is typically energetic and motoric, providing an appealing ending to this overall impressive piece.

Shebalin's Second and Third String Quartets (1935 and 1939 respectively) are more mature than the First, with more advanced musical passages that show a kinship with Shostakovich's deviant rhetoric in places (formalism is rather claimable here). But they also show more of Shebalin's individuality and adherence to Russian musical tradition than the Soviet officials would tolerate (although they maintain the lyrical atmosphere of the First). They are major testaments of Shebalin's musical personality that accepts the policies of Soviet Realism, but more or less on its own terms.

The newly formed Krasni Quartet performs these appealing scores well and with commendable intimacy. Their understanding and appreciation of Shebalin's works are apparent throughout, even though there are places where the playing can be more assuring and firm. Nevertheless, this is a very enterprising issue, with Per Skans scholastic booklet essay a major bonus, as always. I do hope this series remains available.

Recommended, with every ounce of enthusiasm.
