This is a strange program for a recital but Richter was like that, he took works and played them incessantly for one or two years and then left them. He may or may not go back to them. Nevertheless, this is one of those rare occasions in which he decided to only play Beethoven and only Variations. Enjoy! It is exciting and OOP, which makes it all the more rare.

From the notes: "Richter's achievement is often to shake off the accrued bad habits of tradition and to look at the score anew –often revealing a wealth of fresh insights. The clarity that is such a trademark of Richter's style -clarity of phrase, counterpoint, pedalling- also contributes to a rounded picture of the work at hand. Richter's insights are not, it should be stressed, those of formal, academic musical analysis, about which he is scathing: 'I detest analysis, which kills fantasy and which is the enemy of art. … Enough with musical blah-blah; music speaks for itself.' No, we must, in Richter's case, speak more vaguely of a remarkable intuitive grasp of musical organization, and an equally remarkable ability to communicate it at the keyboard."
