"On Target" is the 1983 album by the soul girl group The Jones Girls. The band were an R&B trio of sisters from Detroit, Michigan. They first recorded for GM Records before moving to Philadelphia International Records with Gamble & Huff. The Jones Girls consisted of sisters Brenda, Valorie and Shirley Jones. They served as backup singers for Lou Rawls, Teddy Pendergrass, Aretha Franklin, and Le Pamplemousse. They also worked with Diana Ross and were the backup singers on Linda Clifford's album If My Friends Could See Me Now and on Tower of Power's album Back On The Streets. On Target is a stylistic departure from The Jones Girls' Philadelphia International output, and instead of sounding like a combination of the Three Degrees and the Emotions, The Jones Girls end up sounding like a combination of the Emotions, Chic, and Change. This release was a solid outing nonetheless, and Wright and Thornton do right by The Jones Girls on infectious grooves such as "2 Win U Back," "Curious," "I Can Make a Difference," and the title song. Van McCoy's "Baby, I'm Yours," which was a major hit for Barbara Lewis, saw The Jones Girls successfully add a touch of funk to the tune, while staying true to its sentimental nature.
