Arranger Thomas Talbert had not recorded as a leader in over 20 years when he had a rare opportunity to document his California band. Half of the music on this Sea Breeze CD is the five-song "Louisiana Suite" which pays tribute to aspects of the state but does not hint at New Orleans jazz. Talbert also performs six of his shorter originals; his 14-piece band consists of four woodwinds, a french horn, four trumpets, two trombones and a rhythm section.The results should easily please fans of modern big bands and it does seem strange that Thomas Talbert's next record would not be cut for another decade. ~ Scott Yanow
