VA - Where Southern Soul Began Vol.3: 1957-1963 (2015)

An excellent look at the sounds that gave birth to southern soul – that blend of blues, R&B, gospel, and other righteous sounds that were brewing below the Mason-Dixon line at the end of the 50s – which later rose to tremendous fame on labels like Stax and Atlantic! The tracks here are mostly from before a time when those labels focused on the music, though – and include a huge number of obscure singles we'd never heard before – all packaged with lavish notes on the music and full color images – clearly showing a lot more care to the presentation than you'd usually get for a collection of this nature.
